September 11, 2001 – five years after the attacks many people are asking questions about what happened on that day in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Websites, articles, books and documentaries have put forward a variety of alternate theories to the government’s account of what happened. The most popular of these is a documentary called “Loose Change.” Now, a book dealing with many of these theories has just been published by the magazine Popular Mechanics, it’s called “Debunking 9/11 Myths: Why Conspiracy Theories Can’t Stand Up to the Facts.” In a Democracy Now! national broadcast exclusive, we host a debate between the filmmakers of Loose Change and the editors of Popular Mechanics on 9/11.

US health debate stalls

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under debate | No Comments »

A live televised discussion on healthcare reform in Washington was meant to re-energise debate and help politicians find a compromise on the issue.

But after more than six hours of televised discussions between the president and congressional leaders, there appears to be little movement on reaching a deal.

What would you say is the greatest debate about the paranormal?

Posted by admin on February 17th, 2010 and filed under debate | 14 Comments »

You know the typical does paranormal events happen? Do ghosts exist and what about the different abilities? Is it the orb debate? Is it about Ouija boards being a toy or demonic? What do you think?

The orb debate is the most overblown. Paranormal investigators with knowledge and experience know they are simple photographic effects. Ouija boards are by far the silliest.
Why after thousands of years of sightings and abilities, is there still no verifiable evidence? For the first couple of thousand there were good excuses. Now with recording devices, and millions of claims, it seems something would turn up.
The greatest debate is "It Doesn’t Work Like That, Why". That one question, opens up all the others.

How do you start a debate? What is the proper way to format a debate?

Posted by admin on February 15th, 2010 and filed under debate | 2 Comments »

Me and my friends for social studys are gonna do a debate. On if Obama has helped so far. How would we start? Whats the form? State the opinions first then share facts?

Here is an excerpt for an article on wikipedia.org:

A rule-based competitive debate is often encouraged in high schools and colleges. Often, it takes the form of a contest with explicit rules. It may be presided over by one or more judges. Each side seeks to win, by following the rules, and even by using some rules to break other rules, within limits. Each side is either in favor ("for, ‘Affirmative’ "), or opposed to ("against, ‘Negative’ "), a statement (proposition, moot or Resolution) which if adopted would change something with the exception of some high school and college debate where moots may hold no outcome ie. the moot "ignorance is bliss". Some of the rules are broad and must be followed in a general way. For example, those in favor of the proposition are

required to show the need for it to be adopted as it is written, and yet are
allowed to define the scope of the proposition; i.e. they choose what it will mean if adopted.
