There’s a lot to do! Here’s what to expect.

NFL debate season begins either this month or the beginning of next month, depending on where you live. When the season starts, you will have to option to attend about 3 tournaments a month. You may or may not be expected to attend all tournaments- at my school, you’re required to go to like 5 per year, plus earn 250 NFL points (you get these from competing). The regular debate season ends in February (again, this may vary depending on your location) unless you are selected to attend tournaments that will qualify you to state and nationals.

Tournaments run from Friday afternoon and continue throughout Saturday. At the tournaments here in Missouri, the schedule runs something like this:

Friday
2:30 PM: Round 1 extemp draw
3:00 PM: Round 1 of IEs begin
4:30 PM: Round 2 extemp draw
5:00 PM: Round 2 of IEs begin
7:00 PM: Round 1 of debate begins
8:30 PM: Round 2 of debate begins

Saturday
7:00 AM: Semi-finals extemp draw
7:30 AM: Semi-finals of IEs begin
9:00 AM: Round 3 of debate begins
10:30 AM: Round 4 of debate begins
1:00 PM: Finals extemp draw
1:30 PM: Finals of IEs begin
3:00 PM: Awards ceremony
4:30 PM: Quarterfinals of debate begin
6:00 PM: Semi-finals of debate begin
7:30 PM: Finals of debate begin

Tournaments never finish early, and more often than not they run late, sometimes up to 2 hours late if it’s a really poorly organized tournament. If the tournament is not in town (and many won’t be), then the bus ride to the tournament might take anywhere from a 1/2 hour to 3 1/2 hours. Even if you’re done competing by 11:30 AM on Saturday (or even 6:00 PM on Friday if you’re not doing a debate event), you WILL have to stay until the last person from your team is done competing (which might be at 8:45 PM on Saturday) because you all rode the same bus. So depending on how many events you’re in (up to 3) and how far you advance, you could be in for a lot of sitting around. Definitely bring an iPod, book, and/or homework for other classes.

A rundown of events:

Debate-

Policy- You and a partner debate against an opposing team on this resolution: "The United States federal government should substantially reduce its military and/or police presence in one or more of the following: South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Turkey." If you are on the affirmative side, you will argue a plan to increase military/police presence. If you are negative, you will argue against the affirmative’s plan. The entire debate lasts about 1h 15 min. The resolution (topic) stays the same for the whole year

Lincoln-Douglas (LD)- You debate (without a partner) about a resolution that changes every 2 months. Currently the topic is: States ought not possess nuclear weapons. LD debate involves more abstract concepts than policy, and centers around morals and values. The debate is about 40 min.

Public Forum (PuF)- PuF topics change every month. The October topic is "Resolved: NATO presence improves the lives of Afghan citizens." You do debate with a partner. In PuF, you don’t argue for or against a specific plan (like policy), but you argue the resolution in general. Also, you hardly use philosophy like in LD. The debate is about 40 min.

In my opinion, policy is the most difficult type of debate, then LD, then PuF.

As for Individual Events (IEs)…

International Extemp- You draw 3 questions concerning foreign policy and affairs, and pick one. You get 30 minutes to prepare a 7 minute speech answering the question. Your school will have big tubs containing printed news articles that you can use to help research. You are not allowed to use electronic devices to look up info. Asking teammates for help is discouraged. For the first few tournaments you can get away with using a 5"x 3" notecard while you speak, but then you won’t be able to use notes at all.

Domestic Extemp- Just like Int’l Extemp except all your questions will deal solely with the United States.

Original Oratory- You deliver a pre-written, memorized, 10 minute persuasive speech about anything (but preferably not too controversial because then your judge might be biased).

Dramatic Interpretation- You basically perform part of a play, book, or anything that’s published for 10 minutes. You can’t use props or costumes. Your selection has to be a drama, so really anything that’s not funny.

Humorous Interpretation- Same rules as Dramatic Interp, except you perform something that’s funny to the audience.

Duo Interpretation- It’s like Dramatic and Humorous Interp except you perform with a partner, never looking directly at that partner. You can act out either a dramatic or humorous piece, or even something that’s both.

So, I hope this helped you decide whether you want to join. I definitely encourage you to; it’s really fun and makes you a much better communicator and writer! Plus it looks good on college applications.
