Of course not. Just because you are innocent does not turn you into a legal genius or a confident public speaker.

If there is strong circumstancial evidence pointing to your guilt then you need skill and experience to spot the weaknesses in the evidence and to point them out. Without a trained lawyer even an entirely innocent person might not be able to do this.

Maybe they mean the "National Forensic League".

"However, another kind of forensics, involving an investigation of political, economic and philosophical evidence, is widely practiced in high school and college. Debate forensics is a competitive academic activity with tremendous educational value." –
1. The art or study of formal debate; argumentation.
2. The use of science and technology to investigate and establish facts in criminal or civil courts of law.

This is my school homework, kindly help me.
What is the importance of having so much debate and discussions in the parliament when we know that the view of the ruling party is going to prevail? Write a debate.

IN theory, the debate is supposed to be there for MP’s who haven’t made their minds up about a particular issue, and for those who have made their minds up to convince the others of their viewpoint or conclusion.

It’s supposed to stop one party or person in power from being able to implement any changes that will be detrimental to the country or give themselves even more powers. In effect to stop Tyranny and Dictatorship.

However, in practice most debates are only theatre as we have closed votes where Mp’s of a Party HAVE to vote the way their Party wants them to, to "toe the Party line" and there is the Whip System, where MP’s are punished if they do not. The punishment could be forced resignation, removal from important jobs and committees etc.

Also, a lot of behind the scenes deals are made. e.g If the Tories wanted Labour to vote a certain way, they might say if you vote for this bill, we’ll vote in favour of your "x bill", or they might say we would have voted for your X but we won’t if you don’t vote for our Y.

They also use personal attacks/information as a form of blackmail. e.g
MP 1 " would be a shame if the public discovered X about you as you have so much potential and could one day be Party Leader"
MP2 "you can count on me"

SO in theory, it’s supposed to safeguard the public and the political and social status quo, in practice it’s just a show to pretend that democracy really works.

So for my advance speech class we are giving debates as our final. The debate topic is if marijuana should be legalized or not. I have never done a real debate and since this is our final I feel like it will be graded very harshly and I have no clue of what to expect or how to prepare for this final. If you have any good ideas on how to prepare or what I should be looking for that would be so great. Thank you!

I regularly enter debating competitions and do well using these techniques

-BE CONFIDENT! Even if you have no idea what you’re talking about, make them think you do. This is the most important thing I could tell you! Believe me! It is the best thing you could possibly do!
-don’t just memorise your speech
-watch some on the internet to see what works well and what doesn’t
-know your stuff. Read up on the subject as much as possible.
-think about arguments the other teams might bring up and think of replies and counter arguments.
-use notes. Don’t write out your entire speech, but make sure you have something to refer to.

Hope this helps and I hope you do well in your final! Just remember to be confident and you’ll be fine!

I am unsure of how to format a debate conclusion. If you have any tips on what to include that would be great. Some references to sites would be great too!

Thanks.

I’ve done debate for 2 years at my high school and our coach gave us this website to check out. http://www.albertadebate.com/ Take a look under online resources.

The one thing you have to remember if you’re doing Canadian Parliamentary style is that no new information can be used in the conclusion. The other thing is that you need to quickly sum up what you’ve said and why you’re right, what you’re opponents have said and why they’re wrong. Its used to quickly recap what’s happened in the debate. Because you need to include in your conclusion what your opponents have said and why they’re wrong, you can’t really write it beforehand. Remember rule number one in debate: say what you’re going to say, say it, then say it again.
Hope this helps!

I have weak communication skills and want to take a program to make it stronger. I was wondering whether or not learning debate would help when it comes to public speaking.

A public speaker who just makes a speech has it easier as they don’t have to respond to opponents like a politician does in debate. So a preacher has it easier because nobody gets to answer back.

I’m British and our Prime Minister gets 30 minutes of questions every Wednesday in Parliament – he REALLY has to "think on his feet" as the questions fly back and forth. It’s all a bit of theatre really but it shows up weaknesses. Our last Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was just plain rude about any question he didn’t like and that’s part of why he got voted out last year.

Learning debate helps but it also helps to get the confidence to give a public speech first. THEN there are less worries and you can debate properly.

You have two people, one a Christian, one an atheist. Both are the most intelligent of those two philosophies, they never make a logical fallacy and argue fluently and flawlessly, having extensively researched their belief/non-belief.

You put them together in an arbitrated debate. The question: who would win?

It’s a silly hypothetical scenario, I know, but just go with it, and tell me what you guys think and who would win if this situation were possible, and two such people existed.

Debates exist only to sway the audience. Most people are going to be swayed to agree with positions they already hold, and since most people are believers, the results of the debate are predictable. In debates between totally unprepared, illogical Christians, and prepared atheists, the Christians tend to win even when they make no sense, because it’s a popularity contest. Assuming for the sake of argument, however, that the Christian never makes a logical fallacy … he wouldn’t be saying much.
