It seems like people are getting mored dumbed-down over time (because of the media and maybe the water/vaccines/etc. too). Sixteen years from now, will debates be even more dumbed down? Will they be shorter? Will the candidates speak differently and present viewers short videos to make their arguments?
Who knows? We may just be able to watch future presidential debates via hologram from the palms of our very hands or on our vehicle dashboard. Nifty. As the average American work load increases and the average attention span becomes shorter, the utilization of edited "sound bites" and corny campaign catch-phrases will become the standard for future candidates to adhere to, whether they welcome it or not. Few truly informed voters will even bother to fully investigate claims maid by candidates in order to make a truly informed decision. This, in turn, gives demogogues and other opportunists with a hidden agenda to take advantage of not only the shorter attention spans but also general apathy that still remains a problem amongst a huge swath of the voting-eligible public. Thus, it can be said that the problem is not that Americans are uninformed but rather MISinformed about issues that are of deep concern along with the candidates themselves.
As far as "dumbing down" is concerned, many voters then were just as ignorant, if not more so than, many of today’s voters are in regards to the issues pertinent to their respective times. (Of course, it could be due to lack of access to clean water, modern medicine, or to mainstream press outlets such as newspapers, TV/radio, telegraph, etc. that could be attributed to such ignorance amongst our predecessors.) Yesterday’s politicians, much like many of today’s, depended upon a fickle, fearful public to make their rhetoric more appealing.
The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Do you know who you will vote for already or will the debates help you decide?
I’m curious to know how effective the debates are to us.
No. My mind is already made up. But, I will watch all of the debates. Even the VP one.

Remember when everyone patted George W Bush on the back for showing up sober to the debates with Al Gore?
Now all Sarah Palin has to do to win the debate tomorrow is not be retarded.
Is that fair?
When you have low standards, your expectations will always be met.

When are the next debates for both the Democratic and Republican presidential caucuses?
And has anyone noticed that there is no easy place to find the dates for political debates other than for the debates on CNN? I was not even aware of a Las Vegas debate until the day of; this is an annoying problem.
You can find out about the republican debates on Ron Paul’s web page. The next one is at the Reagan Presidential library and they are still trying to figure out a way to invite Guliani and Thompson without inviting Ron Paul (who leads them both in primary votes thus far.)
I think they are hoping Thompson will take SC, Guiliani will take FL and Ron Paul WON’T take NV.
Otherwise they will have to dither some more.
Fox had killer ratings for the debate they DID invite RP to, though, which makes this curious.
The debates suck really bad since the media and their so called journalists are biased and many are CFR members.
It’s so they can control who gets airtime and what gets out to the American people.
An honest debate will never happen so long as the forum is controlled by those with an agenda. Not that that’d be true of FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, or CNN…oh wait, my bad! They’re all controlled by global corporations…
