An Experience That Changed Me
PMy family and I have moved many times from city to city and from state to state but never outside my country, Mexico. When I learned that we were moving, I became very excited. When I knew that we were moving to Chicago, I was even happier; I was going to explore a new land! My excitement was a correct instinct, for when my family and got off the airplane, I saw what I thought of as stars falling from the dark blue sky; it was December 24th 2006.
PHowever, when the first day of school started, I realized something I had never thought of: everyone spoke English. I was lost! I was left out of conversations; nobody liked to speak Spanish or knew it well enough to speak it. My classes were very difficult; I would sit in front of a teacher whose words I could not decipher, whose book I could not read, and whose perspective I could not understand. Math class, although easier, was the worst of all since I would know an answer and be laughed at for mispronouncing it. The social aspects of school tortured me the most. The native speakers were judging the sound of my voice rather than the essence of my words. Soon after my arrival, I became extremely self-conscious and low-voiced
PTrying to learn a new language can be a very frustrating experience when nobody is willing to lend a helping hand. My life was like an old saying from Mexico,“cuando sientes que te vas a ahogar es que aprendez a nadar” (when you are about to drown, you learn how to swim). I started to memorize sounds and write them down to say common phrases. This and other methods failed. It was not until the day I tried to to break up a sentence into parts of speech that I started to see some progress. I soon developed a passion for English. I became inspired by various public speakers to be the best, to control masses through my charming words, and to break all barriers. When I entered high school, I joined debate. The first tournament was devastating; a lost battle. The last one, however, was a perfect score on the speaker points: an achievement. I still had a great vocabulary to learn, so I practiced every day. By my junior year I felt very confident; nobody seemed to notice much of a difference on my fluency. Later on that year, I realized how far I had come. I had a line of students waiting for me to revise their essays. I was once helpless, now I am helping others. That was the day I realized I had broken all language barriers.
PAfter being lost, scared, and alone, this hard work, passion, and determination helped me through . My excitement from the first day I stepped into Chicago that December night and saw the snow falling and shining through the sky came back to me, and now I feel I have found the place where I finally belong.
P means paragraph. Please DESTROY this essay. I need lots of help with this! the more you make me work on it the better it ‘ll be!
Never been to cali but thanks. I’m actually applying to middlebury, in vermont. umm how do i say this without sounding mean… vermont= white kids (sorry!) I doubt this is over used THERE. but thanks, so I AM ALL OVER THE PLACE. gotta fix that. someone else please?

Destroy you??? You’re amazing!!! Remember Leonard H from Yahoo Answers when you win that big writing prize for one of your books. I predicted it first. A couple of changes to the essay I would make:

1) What are the falling stars? That’s unclear at first. You might write something like "I saw snow for the first time in my life, falling like stars from the dark blue-grey sky." Snow doesn’t really fall from a blue sky, so I changed that a bit.

2) Near the end, I would write "…and saw the snow falling and glimmering in the sky…"

Great job, but Sharpsna… makes some interesting points.

Newt Gingrich keeps accusing the media of having some kind of conspiracy to get Republicans fight one another. Would he prefer the debate consist of everyone agreeing with each other?

For the record, he also said the same thing when Fox News hosted the first debate – that they were trying to get him to fight (disagree) with his Republican opponents.
Uncle Pennybags: In other words, you admit Newt avoids the question to go on an "I hate Obama" tirade.

He’s just going for the "Obama is evil" easy applause lines. He doesn’t want to discuss differences he might have with other candidates.

I’m noticing how it seems almost mandatory with women nowadays, regardless of race, background or whatever, that whoever the girl is talking to or with has to be capable of not only having THEIR sh*t right (ex: good car, good job, dress nice, etc.) but be able to take care of them too (mall trips?). I thought it took two to make a relationship? Some people can’t help the situation they’re in financially or in their personal life, so that’s where you get each other on track or just be there as support. But I think relationships nowadays are more so a tool for women AND men in their own respects to fill voids or scratch a temporary itch so to speak.

That’s just my bit, lol, I’m curious to hear the feedback now..and I’ll respond to anyone who wants to debate on this
@ kait, but that joke only has power if the girl walks to the kitchen and makes it, no? lmao if no girl ever went and made a sandwich then the joke would make no sense
@ kylie, well you got women that have fought and still fight to have "equal rights" as men do and feel like they get subjected and mistreated basically because they have a vagina and boobs. To me, a body part shouldn’t matter here nor there because money isn’t sexist at the end of the day
oh trust me I’m no beginner in this, I just have to in ways refresh the logic I have because people are just so perplex nowadays, it’s too hard to "pick em" because most of em are just camouflaged as mr or mrs right for as long as they need to be until that sense of entitlement kicks in or finally comes out

i see both sides of this.

but a guy will also make fun of a woman telling her to "get in the kitchen." or "do the laundry." or make them a sandwich.

i do agree with you on some aspects,

I am married for last one year. I had a love marriage. I asked her if she had any pre marital relations before wedding , she said no and later on i got married to her. However after 6 months of marriage i came to know that she had been in relation with a boy. Being from a family with high morals i felt cheated. I asked her and she confessed it after some time that she had physical relation with him.

I was hurt a lot but tried to forget it.For last 6 months i tried to come out of this but not able to do so. This relationship is spoiling my life . I want to move on and start a new life with someone or alone but it is just not possible for me to stay with her.

I am trying to convince her for divorce but she is not ready. I am ready for alimony and all and i want her to lead a good life but it is just not possible for me to live with someone who has values so different from me and lied to me.

I need help for divorce unilaterally … i am young (26) so time is not constraint for me to remarry and money is also not constraint.. plz suggest me how to proceed… contact of good lawyers etc….

PS: I do not want to debate virginity issue … just want to save my life from getting spoiled…

The fact about the premarital relationship where there was sexual relationship between the wife with another man was disclosed after six months of marriage that is six months back.
The concealment of facts about herself at the time of marriage for obtaining the consent for marriage amounts to fraud as if this fact was known to you you would not have given your consent for marriage.
The time period within which the annulment of marriage can be filled on this ground is one year from the time this fraud was discovered, hence you still have time limitation for filling for annulment of the marriage.
The fact about the premarital relationship between your wife with another man with whom she had physical relationship too is in the form of her verbal statement only, there is no recording of this statement, no witness other than you in whose presence it was made, the fact she was actually in relationship and such person actually exist in another issue to be taken care in the present case, the person with whom she had relationship before the marriage can be very important witness to prove this fact.
All these issues have to be tackled before the Petition for annulment of marriage is filled against the wife to dissolve the marriage by decree of nullity.

I’m taking part in model united nations for the first time, as a delegate.. I’m really nervous and don’t want to suck, this will be my first debate.. any tips please:(
Thanks in advance:)

Hello fellow delegate! I participate to MUN too and this year I’ll be my country’s ambassador at an international conference.

Some tips? Okay, look:
First of all, you should be really prepared. You should know everything for your topics and your country so that you won’t have to be anxious.
Then, you should prepare good resolutions. With these in hand, you’ll be really successful at the debate.

Now, during the lobbying:
Smile! Be professional (don’t giggle, be friendly, talk in positive attitude) and try to find your country’s allies. Look at their resolutions and decide whether you’re with them or not.
When you writing the final draft of resolutions, talk and try to show your resolutions as much as possible. Explain why you think they’re good and try to make them use some of your clauses.

During the debate:
If you’re the "anxious" type of person, like me, write down your speeches or your points of information so that you won’t tremble or mumble while you’re talking.
Don’t be afraid to rise your placard! Try to rise it every time your enemies talk and try to support your country.
Don’t be afraid to be passionate! Passion is good at MUN as long as you don’t assault other countries.
Don’t be afraid to get bitchy. That’s good.

At the G.A.:
If you ‘re a delegate of an GA Committee then you’ll be present at the GA debate session. Write down your speech and rise your placard, like during the debate.

MUN is a great experience and you should enjoy it to the fullest! Good luck dear delegate!

I have watched the entirety of the GOP Debate @ New Hampshire, and I (like many others) was very impressed with Dr. Paul’s thorough analysis and insight upon getting this nation back on track. A straw poll has shown that 40% support Ron Paul. Does he have a chance to catch up to Romney (the front-runner) and beat him? What is your opinion of Ron Paul? How likely is he to win against President Obama?

Thank you for your input!

Still not very likely, I’m afraid. His "Hands Off" philosophy of government is still pretty much at odds with the majority of Republicans, who seem to desire a more activist conservatism.

I like what he says in theory; but I suspect it would be particularly difficult to implement in the current political climate.

When they were in control of the house and senate since 2006? The congress has full spending and legislative powers, not the president. There were problems with his policy but I dont like how democrats refuse to take any blame. They have controlled 2/3 of the legislative institutions since 2006 and thats when the economy started to falter. On that note, who won the debate tonight?
I just feel like im living in bizarro-world sometimes when I hear this.

You are wrong. The economy has been going to falter for decades, due to a mixture of political and business incompetence at high levels. Bush was a useless idiot who made a bad ecocomy worse; Obama is the one holding a bomb that was made years ago. Not that any of his policies will help either.
I just hope the US doesn’t go into another extremist phase like it has done every so often in history.

I’m going to take a standardized test in about 7 months and my weakness is reading comprehension. Every time I read a passage, I lose my focus and have trouble understanding the main idea (unless its an easy and interesting passage).
My plan was to keep reading books for the next 7 months (maybe finish a book every two weeks, and just keep reading a new book every 2 weeks or so). Books will mainly be about literature, social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, etc. Also, I’m planning to read articles online from places such as the economist, NY times, etc.

I was also thinking about reading some forums online.. forums that has some kind of debate and arguments between people…I think this will be a good practice for me to pick up different perspectives and try to understand what people are saying, trying to understand their argument, logic, etc. Do you guys have a good forum website for where i can practice this?

Do you guys think all of this is a good approach? Will I improve my reading comprehension in the next 7 months? Would you add/take out anything from this plan?

Any advice is much appreciated.

My advice is frustrating, but my own reading comprehension didn’t kick in until I was in my 20’s. It wasn’t until then that I learned how to read a passage with the ability to see the big picture. It was like something clicked. I have no idea how it happened, but it definitely happened as I was reading more thoughtfully, like you’re planning to do.

It really comes in focusing less on each sentence, on each paragraph, and just letting yourself read the work without honing in on random sentences and statements. When I was younger, I would read a sentence that SEEMED important, and would focus in on it without letting myself see the big picture, the main idea.

That’d be my main advice: don’t hone in on random sentences or phrases, instead focus on the big picture.

My mother is very accepting of gay/lesbian people, and, like me, believes that God does not condemn homosexuals, but my father is not. Frankly, I don’t care what he thinks, but my mother would tell him anyways.

I wouldn’t even tell them now if it weren’t necessary. I’m fifteen, and live in a conservative Tennessee town. Ever since…April or May of last year, I’ve been questioning my sexuality. I’ve spoken to two friends about this since then, and they’ve been nothing but supportive.

The thing that first made me wonder whether or not I was possibly bi/lesbian were random thoughts that would pop into my head about women, and me making habit of noticing them in a more than friendly way. Also, I had a thing for my bisexual best friend for a few weeks, before we stopped talking. I tried to ignore all of that, however, and decided that maybe I was straight and just liked one girl seriously.

In the past two months, however (it’s mid-August), I’ve grown increasingly more interested in women, but I’ve ignored it until recently. A senior in the band with me asked me to be his girlfriend and go out with him, and I agreed, because he is funny and nice and cute. However, after the first day, something felt…off. I never kissed him, but just thinking about it made me incredibly hesitant and uncomfortable, to my shock. I felt repulsed by the idea of doing anything physical with him or saying romantic things, and I wasn’t sure why. (take note, I’ve always been very good friends with guys, as opposed to girls, not that I haven’t had girl friends. I’m just more comfortable with male friends.)

After sitting down and agonizing over it for two weeks (constantly on my mind, that is; I’ve actually thought about it for 4+ months), I realized that I am also repulsed by the idea of having sex with a man. The naked male anatomy is not visually pleasing to me, and that confused me as I’ve always found guys’ faces to be ‘cute’, or whatever. I’ve realized, though, that you can’t think of someone as ‘attractive’ without actually being attracted to them.

On the other hand, for the past few months I’ve been reading lesbian smut about my favorite Glee pairings, and it never registered that finding that hot could be a red flag for me being not-so-straight (not that all people who find that hot are gay). I sat down and thought about sex with a woman, and I am completely comfortable with it; it seems beautiful and natural to me, when having sex with a man makes me uncomfortable and does not get me ‘hot and bothered’, etc.

I keep reading that people think it’s a phase for people my age to think they’re gay, but I’ve known a few people who’ve had a ‘phase’ before deciding they are straight. And I think that’s because they didn’t really think through the sexual aspect, and didn’t think through their futures.

I, however, can see myself marrying a woman, having children, spending the rest of my life with her. I just…can’t see that with a man. And it’s been hard for me to imagine a future with a man since a young age. I also remember, at eight or nine, hearing other girls call guys ‘hot’, and joining in on the conversations even though it felt strange (though that might have been because of my age.)

I have really thought this through, so don’t call it a phase. I actually like a girl at school in my grade, and I’ve caught her looking at me several times when she thinks I’m paying attention in band.

But back to the initial question, how do I tell my parents, or rather, my mother? I’d be more comfortable telling her first, as I cannot stand my father. I’ve even debated telling my band director (who is like a father to me, at the young age of 26), but decided that it’d be wisest to speak to my mother first.

I want to tell her in a not-so-blunt way as ‘I’m gay. Bye.’, like I’ve seen before. I’m not sure if her acceptance would still be in place when it comes to her daughter, but I’m hoping as much. I feel it’s necessary because they’ve been asking lots of questions as to why I got rid of my boyfriend so quickly, and why I don’t want a boyfriend, etc. I’ve been lying and saying I just don’t want one, but that won’t work for long.

Firstly keep in mind since you are young you still need to live at home and if everyone doesn’t accept you that can make things very difficult to deal with while going to school and soon getting a job and such, which is why most people if they only have one person they trust to be accepting will wait until they are 18 to fully come out as they can just leave if the rest of their family makes them feel weird. Since you already do like a girl if you think you would like to be her girlfriend I can see why you would want to come out now, it does make relationships easier if a family knows about your girlfriend so she won’t feel like you are hiding her or ashamed of how you were born. Ok so now onto you actually telling people don’t even bother with the director your sexuality isn’t something that you should feel a need to share with everyone stick with family and friends other then that it is no one else’s business the same way that people don’t all go around saying how many bf’s/gf’s they had to everyone they meet. So for your mother just tell her that you have something to tell her about yourself and hope she can accept you for who you are and know how you feel in your heart. That you like girls and that it’s not just a fleeting phase that you felt this for awhile now and just want her to support you. If she goes well you had a bf just say yes I wanted to see how things would go with him but realized that guys overall are not what I’m looking for so that is why I broke it off so fast as to not lead him on and not to do an injustice to yourself by staying with someone that you just aren’t attracted to. As for your father just don’t tell him and tell your mother to not say anything to him as of yet that you just wanted to confide in her and her alone and when you are ready(probably when you’re 18, or if you start bringing a gf over) you will tell your father. Good luck I hope all goes well no matter what you decide to do, and it’s absolutly amazing that you are figuring out who you are some people struggle for so long trying to find themselves in many different aspects.
