    Well, to say “simply governed” is a gross oversimplification.

    The truth is, his little tirade was based in ignorance. It’s like saying, “If gasoline is liquid, and cold, then how does it make fire, which is hot?”. It’s just plain old stupid, it involves insurmountably more complex constituents, though.

    Again, the religious have a problem with randomness, material, and evolution. Why? If they really believe god created everything, why not randomness, material, and evolution?

    I understand what Wilson was doing. cbruer summarized what I was trying to say in a much more lucid way than I could. I’m an agnostic so I don’t consider the deistic position to be an illogical one but one that garners no evidence.

    To be fair, I think his point is even more fundamental than evolution. If our world is simply governed by the quantum interaction of subatomic particles… whose mathematical description involves probability and randomness… then how do we derive meaning from that?

    Of course I would say, that proves nothing about the existence of god, and that we exist because otherwise we wouldn’t. Don’t need much more meaning than that.

    He wasn’t making a point, he was playing devil’s advocate. He was saying “gee how silly would that be”.

    If he had made that point, it would be different. He was trying to prove that thesis wrong. Also, it’s nothing new, and theists make quite a few points by sort of taking on the position of the atheist. In fact, it’s the only time they ever make a valid point.

    No, I don’t think he was articulate, either. He didn’t act like a raving lunatic, as he would love to do with the right audience.

    Wilson’s point at about 5:59 – 6:15. If you notice, Hitchens actually concedes this point, but then states that it’s nonsensical to try define or assign “order” to any authority.

    That’s Don Imus and, believe it or not, at one time he was quite funny.

    He was always a conservative but he seemed to understand the basic concept of fairness in his examination of the world.

    Now, he’s a co-opted old man shilling for Fox in a hat so big it looks like his stack-of-dimes neck might shatter under it’s mass at any moment.

    In fairness, however, at one time, he understood the need for critical thinking. At his age, who am I to judge? I might give up by then too.
