What style of debate is used in high-school level competitions in Malaysia?
Is it a British Parliamentary style? I want to join my school team but I KNOW NOTHING!!! And what are the rules? If you know a lot, maybe you could email me or something? Enlighten me!
Depends on the subject of debate. If it’s politics, the style will be Westminster style. i.e. British Parliamentary style with a difference – DO NOT CRITICIZE THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT EVEN IF THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG – because the Malaysian Govt. cannot take criticism. If it’s belief and religion (which I’m very sure will not be allowed) then better stay away from saying that there should not be an official religion. And never, (dont even think about it) never criticize the Malaysian government’s "instill Islamic values" policy (as if other religions have no values, as if only Islamic values are good).
If it’s about human rights, always say Malaysia has the best human rights policy because if you dont, chances are you will be arrested under Malaysia’s Draconian law – the ISA. Internal Security Act that provides for detention without trial, guilty even if proven innocence.
If it’s about racial harmony, be sure to say "yes" to Malay sovereignty (Ketuanan Melayu) because in Malaysia it’s the Malays who are first class citizens.
Now I’m sure you know that even if Malaysia’s political system is based on the British political system there is nothing similar. While the British advocates equality for all, Malaysia’s Muslim rulers advocates "equality among Muslims, everything else does not matter".
And good luck with your debate.

The rule is to always go for opposing the proposal – in this way, you gain the experience of doing research and putting up your arguements- e.g. if the proposal is " Malaysia should be without the NEP " , go against the proposal….

All the debates that i have participated in High school are called parliamentary debat, and it is british style.
We have two teams
1. The Goverment/Affirmative (The team who supports the topic, no matter what topic it is)
-3 speakers i) Prime minister, ii) second minister, iii)3rd minister
2. The Opposition(The team which oppose the topic)
-3 speakers, 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
here are the roles,
1st minister, 2nd and 3rd minister wil present 1 points each suppoting the topic,
where as , the opposition, 1st speaker intro 2 pts and 2nd speaker intro 1 point, and the 3rd mainly rebuts of all the govt points.
All the speaker are given 8 minutes each.
finally , 1st or 2nd speaker from each team will be given 1 minute to wrap up or to give the summary of the their point.
when a speaker is presenting, the opposing party may interrupt with POI (point of information, sumthin like objection) and the speaker may accept and answer or deny and go on.

Better go ask someone who’s already in the Debating team.
Perhaps, the teacher who’s in charge of the team because the style differs from year to year. Same goes for the rules & regulation.
But before that you need to have good command of Eng.
Does your school’s Board Members of Debating Society conduct an interview in choosing qualified debaters?
If yes, be well prepared for the interview. *Do research on the given debating topics.
At least have a general point of view on what issues you might be tested during your interview.
Good Luck

i’m one of the school debater too, just that i’m in the Malay language ones… but i don’t think there’ll be much difference between them, except that the languages are different
i’m assuming it’s kinda the British Parliamentary style since it’s quite similar. don’t worry about not knowing anything buddy, since i was just as clueless like you when i was on form 3. now i’m in form 5 already
okay, about the debate yes. from the experience that i know and sine my friends are english debaters too, basically a team of debate has 3 main speakers and two reserves. 3 for the affirmative team (supports the government) and 3 for opposition team (against the government). if your school debate team can become affirmative and opposition at the same time, it’s okay but you still need back-up speakers to make sure your winning later ;]
an affirmative team consists of 3 speakers: prime minister, 2nd speaker and 3rd speaker. while an opposition team consists of 3 speakers too: the opposition team leader, 2nd speaker, 3rd speaker. based on your topic given, an affirmative team has to support the topic given based on real factual facts and strong contents of script. as for opposition team, they cannot directly say ‘no’ to the topic given since it’s government topic and opposition team are not suppose to critisize the government in a very racism way. you know, etiquette of talking are still apply, so be careful with your mouth.
usually a speaker from the affirmative team will always start to talk his speech. this is important. you cannot POI a speaker (point of information – formal interjection) for the 1st minute of the speech started. a speaker may accept or decline it however. each speaker will have 8 minutes to talk and receive and decline POIs. for conclusion session, a speaker from each team will rise and conclude the whole speech based on the topic for 4 minutes. my teacher said that you have to use up all the time to ensure you marks are not deducted. i don’t know, but time is important too.
all debaters know this: you have to have at least a bumiputra speaker in your team. yes, this is a real fact because i remembered that there’s a school in my district had been disqualified since there’s no bumiputra speaker at all in their team even though they won the battle. i’m very sorry if this sound racism, but this is the truth.
oh yes, you might need help from a group of researches too, like our team has a good team of researchers. i don’t know if your school have a team of researchers too. good luck for everything
