How do you begin a debate’s opening statement supporting the death penalty?
Vividly describe the offense committed and then the penalty called for by law .

Maybe try a quote from the constitution.

similarly to a thesis statement in a paper
try to get the audiences attention and let them know what your argument will be about

The victim had his/her life taken from them, so the murderer should suffer the same unless it was purely self defense

you say an attention getter then say which side you are on and your supporting reasons

Everyone makes their own decision knowing full well what the consequences are. They choose to pass judgment upon themselves.
…Make it how you want it, I guess.
There is a difference between an innocent life and one that has been found guilty. (Eh, this would only be contrary to abortion).

Surf the net and/or visit the library. You’ll find EXCELLENT things to debate upon by doing some research.
The Death Penalty is a popular subject. Google "Support Death Penalty" and see what pops up!

probably not the answer you want…
Megan’s Law.
Jesse Timmendequas was on death’s row until NJ abolished the state’s death penalty. Now it’s life in prison without parole.
Jesse Timmendequas raped and murdered Megan Kanka (7y/o). You think he needs death row or life in prison?
For info purposes….
The why it got abolished.
Basically states are getting rid of the death penalty because it costs more to do a death trial than a normal one. It has to do with that they have to make sure it was done correctly so there are all kinds of extra costs. It was actually cheaper to paid for the food and stay forever then a death trial.

summarize all the points you have to make in your speech in the most intelligent line possible (dont just list exatly what you’ll talk about) but try and summarize them in a statement
such as:
The only way to ensure that our country is safe from the horrid crimes that lurk in the mind of a criminal, is to create a punishment that keeps them from acting upon their evil thoughts, thus saving lives.
this way is vague enough so that you can embellish in the rest of your introduction, but not so vague that it sint a powerful opening sentence that captures the audience.
dont do:
The death penalty can keep America safer, scare the criminals, lower our population, prevent a person in jail from doing the crime again, and give jobs to people who need them as executioners.
its boring, and very plain
NO SPICE in this sentence! haha
a list doesn’t get peoples attention, and if you heard it, you wouldnt be persuaded any more than your audience would be.
SO DO SOMETHING LIKE THE FIRST EXAMPLE!!
(:
fun topic! in my class we had to do boring things like school be madatory or what sould the legal drinving age be
for our debates i mean cuz our teacher didnt want anyone getting to worked up
ugh
if i were you later in the speech id go with how teh ancient philosophy (an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth) is sometimes the best way to teach a lesson though it seems outdated now, sometimes bad people need a dose of their own medicine, and thats called redemption, with their own life. they deserve life less than the person they killed did
