I’m not going to be …
I’m not going to be getting into this debate on healthcare simply because it’s much too complicated of an issue to discuss in the form of youtube comments. However, I just wanted to mention that in the video you say that there are elements of the United States that are socialistic (police, firemen and education) and everyone embraces them, but there is a somewhat decent sized group (Libertarians) that does not embrace tax-funded education and firefighters, and some that oppose tax-funded police.

  2. When you`re healthy …
When you`re healthy, you don`t need care. America`s sickness care system is geared towards bad health. My views on this thing is, real health comes from the soil. If one is consuming good nutritious food, and stays away from commercial non-food, and fluoridated, chlorinated water, you stand a much better chance of living to a good old age, say 120 years. Nobody ever suffered from a drug deficiency. Doctors should be paid when the patient fully recovers and not before.

  3. “Schools, food, and …
“Schools, food, and healthcare all suck” AND you forgot… our federally run Postal Service is losing billions and now debating not to deliver on Saturdays? I think a lot of US citizens also suck now and expect everything without giving nothing. Also, there’s a huge shortage of Fathers now and children are being raised by women (the Mom, her Mom, and her Mom). God we are so screwed…

  4. When I saw your hat …
When I saw your hat and pipe I got worried that you were someone yelling ’socialism, liberty, give me my country back’ ‘ but you’re o.k. My problem with the whole myriad of healthcare reform issues is the lobbyists for insurance and drug companies give so many millions of dollars to these pieces of crap (dem/repub) we have running the country. 1/3 of them are former lawyers or judges? Does that send any flags out to us? They’ll lie or cheat or do anything for money.

  5. Well put PipeFriend …
Well put PipeFriend. Health care is a very complex issue with pitfalls all over it. And I think you nailed it when you mentioned the fact that doctors (due to federal involvement) are liable beyond reason. As we see in almost everything else, the government usually provides the worst solutions, and usually at the behest of big business and not the public. I’m afraid socialized health care won’t be any different. Our schools, food, and health care all suck. FED = PARASITE

  6. I agree with the ” …
I agree with the “bad genes” comment. I have Multiple Sclerosis and am currently “uninsureable”. Universal health care might not be that bad.

    I believe they do …
I believe they do get healthcare, as it is viewed the same as fire protection and crime protection

  8. But according to …
But according to Amsterdam universal healthcare, do the immigrants get free healthcare? I assume they don’t pay taxes, so the healthcare shouldn’t come with it?

  9. PipeFriendCHS on July 4th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

    You might be amazed …
You might be amazed at how many illegal aliens live in Europe. Europe’s borders are porous to say the least. I used to live in Amsterdam and would go to this market where I bet 50% of the people were illegal aliens from Africa

  10. The “population …
The “population issues” I’m talking about are illegal immigrants and the large areas of minority poverty which exist in the US. Illegals aren’t taxed to begin with, and people at poverty or close to it are not taxed the same as people who earn more, but will be using the healthcare much more. Studies have shown that people who need the most healthcare are ones who can’t afford it. This weighs the system down further than the European system could ever imagine.

  11. There are scare …
There are scare tactics being used on both sides. even the Democratic National Committee is running ads against fellow Democrats considered moderate or conservative to pressure them. To me, the rush to pass this is too fast without the public, much less the House and Senate, being able to read a bill that’s more than 1,000 pages long. Let the public voice their concerns in town halls during the break. And let’s not rush to make something worse.

    I am not sure I …
I am not sure I follow your argument about population: More citizens is more healthcare but also more taxes. Europe has tiny nations with universal healthcare and populous nations with universal healthcare

  13. I am a social …
I am a social moderate and an economic conservative, so the healthcare debate is a little tricky for me. Something that we all need to remember is that in European countries and in Canada, population issues don’t exist which do in the US. For example, California alone has more people than the entire country of Canada. Also written into the healthcare bill is healthcare for illegal immigrants paid for by taxpayers. The solution is easy for us: Renounce citizenship for free healthcare.

  14. I do see where you …
I do see where you are coming from with pre-exisiting conditions, but the gov is still going to have that. Check out page 29 lines 4-8, there is still a max that you will receive. I am still reading it, but if I understand things correctly, and other government run health cares around the world, the gov has the right to cut off your benefits and care if you get to expensive. I would rather have the option of going broke, then being dead. This doesn’t fix the prob, it puts the gov in charge.

  15. This is a very good …
This is a very good point. I think one of the things that needs to be done is reducing the cost of obtaining the education needed to become a doctor. If the cost is reduced then the “requirement” to be compensated is removed and also more people who are smart enough to become doctors but don’t have the money to go to school would be able to contribute to society. this would increase the number of doctors to account for the influx of new patients that socialized healthcare would create.

Well US has one of …
Well US has one of the longest educational/training paths for doctors. It takes 12 years or so to become a doctor. It would be interesting to ask a person who just spent 12 years and $300K on education not to be concerned about compensation and work for small salary. The other thing is of course drugs – most of the good once come from US companies, that are “for-profit” . Capitalists Medicine works much better than many socialized systems, unfortunately it does not work for everybody.

    I agree with what …
I agree with what you are saying, but what if your genes aren’t good? No matter how much of a hard worker you are, and no matter how accountable you are , if you get a bad chronic medical condition you will go bankrupt unless you are very rich. I have a high paying job , and have seen this happen to a peer. I propose we all shoulder this burden for eachother. Same for pre-existing conditions: Good luck getting a medical care plan/benefits if you have a pre-existing serious condition.

    Thanks for the …
Thanks for the encouragement as I often get “stick to pipe videos!” messages as soon as I do a political video haha

  19. I’d like to see …
I’d like to see more political videos from you. It’s cool to hear the opinions of people that have lived in places other than the USA. I never would have thought about doctors being like police or firemen. I still have all my teeth…..
    ….in a jar.

  20. IMO yours is the …
IMO yours is the best comment. Any reform is worthless without a meaningful change in incentives and implementation of evidence/necessity based medicine …

  21. noladoc30,
    maybe …

    noladoc30,
maybe you didn’t notice but the government has been running most of the healthcare for decades

who do you like to deal with more, MediCare or private insurers ?

and what about the outcomes, the American health care system is ranked 37th in the World, life expectancy is 45th or something, below Bosnia…

what about the sky-rocketing costs of insurance, the premiums double every couple of years even for the healthy people, 14K people are losing insurance every day.

    We should socialize …
We should socialize our justice system first and see how that goes. All the lawyers will be crappy so lawsuits might become more reasonable. Then all the smart people will go into medicine instead of law because all the money will be there. Even better doctors.

  23. Part of the problem …
Part of the problem here is that medicine has been commercialized. It is solely a “for profit” business. When you get all the medical equipment and pharmaceutical companies involved, it turns into a sick capitalist adventure. For medicine, capitalism doesn’t work. I fear that my personal quality of care will be diminished if medicine is socialized. I am able to secure jobs that provide good to great med. benefit packages. I don’t want to see that go away. My health might be compromised.

  24. I understand, and …
I understand, and do agree that many of us our just a few paychecks away from being homeless. However, why does it becomes every one elses responsibility to take care of me? Why shouldnt we be more like our older American generations, not sure about your home country, where they saved much of what they brought in so they were not as affected by the unexpected. I know its more fun to spend that it is to save, but I prefer to be responsible for myself, not rely on others or the government.

I am not sure if …
I am not sure if this is indicative of all free healthcare: Indians have been shafted for centuries and still are being shafted unfortunately. Congratulations on your engagement by the way!
